    Euclidean Structure from N>=2 Parallel Circles: Theory and Algorithms

    International audienceOur problem is that of recovering, in one view, the 2D Euclidean structure, induced by the projections of N parallel circles. This structure is a prerequisite for camera calibration and pose computation. Until now, no general method has been described for N > 2. The main contribution of this work is to state the problem in terms of a system of linear equations to solve.We give a closed-form solution as well as bundle adjustment-like refinements, increasing the technical applicability and numerical stability. Our theoretical approach generalizes and extends all those described in existing works for N = 2 in several respects, as we can treat simultaneously pairs of orthogonal lines and pairs of circles within a unified framework. The proposed algorithm may be easily implemented, using well-known numerical algorithms. Its performance is illustrated by simulations and experiments with real images

    The structural basis for the specificity of pyridinylimidazole inhibitors of p38 MAP kinase

    AbstractBackground: The p38 mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase regulates signal transduction in response to environmental stress. Pyridinylimidazole compounds are specific inhibitors of p38 MAP kinase that block the production of the cytokines interleukin-1 β and tumor necrosis factor α, and they are effective in animal models of arthritis, bone resorption and endotoxin shock. These compounds have been useful probes for studying the physiological functions of the p38-mediated MAP kinase pathway.Results: We report the crystal structure of a novel pyridinylimidazole compound complexed with p38 MAP kinase, and we demonstrate that this compound binds to the same site on the kinase as does ATP. Mutagenesis showed that a single residue difference between p38 MAP kinase and other MAP kinases is sufficient to confer selectivity among pyridinylimidazole compounds.Conclusions: Our results reveal how pyridinylimidazole compounds are potent and selective inhibitors of p38 MAP kinase but not other MAP kinases. It should now be possible to design other specific inhibitors of activated p38 MAP kinase using the structure of the nonphosphorylated enzyme

    Enhancing the early student experience

    This paper is concerned with identifying how the early student experience can be enhanced in order to improve levels of student retention and achievement. The early student experience is the focus of this project as the literature has consistently declared the first year to be the most critical in shaping persistence decisions. Programme managers of courses with high and low retention rates have been interviewed to identify activities that appear to be associated with good retention rates. The results show that there are similarities in the way programmes with high retention are run, with these features not being prevalent on programmes with low retention. Recommendations of activities that appear likely to enhance the early student experience are provided

    Water Vapor Measurements by Howard University Raman Lidar during the WAVES 2006 Campaign

    Retrieval of water vapor mixing ratio using the Howard University Raman Lidar is presented with emphasis on three aspects: i) performance of the lidar against collocated radiosondes and Raman lidar, ii) investigation of the atmospheric state variables when poor agreement between lidar and radiosondes values occurred and iii) a comparison with satellite-based measurements. The measurements were acquired during the Water Vapor Validation Experiment Sondes/Satellites 2006 field campaign. Ensemble averaging of water vapor mixing ratio data from ten night-time comparisons with Vaisala RS92 radiosondes shows on average an agreement within 10 % up to approx. 8 km. A similar analysis of lidar-to-lidar data of over 700 profiles revealed an agreement to within 20 % over the first 7 km (10 % below 4 km). A grid analysis, defined in the temperature - relative humidity space, was developed to characterize the lidar - radiosonde agreement and quantitatively localizes regions of strong and weak correlations as a function of altitude, temperature or relative humidity. Three main regions of weak correlation emerge: i) regions of low relative humidity and low temperature, ii) moderate relative humidity at low temperatures and iii) low relative humidity at moderate temperatures. Comparison of Atmospheric InfraRed Sounder and Tropospheric Emission Sounder satellites retrievals of moisture with that of Howard University Raman Lidar showed a general agreement in the trend but the formers miss a lot of the details in atmospheric structure due to their low resolution. A relative difference of about 20 % is usually found between lidar and satellites measurements

    Digital image correlation vibrometry with low speed equipment

    A low-cost method is presented which enables digital image correlation (DIC) with conventional cameras (i.e. not high-speed) to be used for determination of vibration deflected shapes via the use of a stroboscopic lamp and some simple ancillary circuits. For each natural frequency of the structure under consideration, a sequence of images is captured asynchronously with the vibrations using the DIC system and the resulting displacement fields are correlated with the excitation signal driving the vibration using a least-squares approach. Three approaches for performing this correlation are outlined, one of which is developed into the algorithm used for processing the present results to obtain the amplitude and phase of the vibration at each point on the specimen, allowing the deflected shape to be reconstructed. This process is illustrated using the example of a vibrating aluminium plate. The resulting shapes and frequencies agree well with finite element modal analyses of the plate

    Bodyweight Perceptions among Texas Women: The Effects of Religion, Race/Ethnicity, and Citizenship Status

    Despite previous work exploring linkages between religious participation and health, little research has looked at the role of religion in affecting bodyweight perceptions. Using the theoretical model developed by Levin et al. (Sociol Q 36(1):157–173, 1995) on the multidimensionality of religious participation, we develop several hypotheses and test them by using data from the 2004 Survey of Texas Adults. We estimate multinomial logistic regression models to determine the relative risk of women perceiving themselves as overweight. Results indicate that religious attendance lowers risk of women perceiving themselves as very overweight. Citizenship status was an important factor for Latinas, with noncitizens being less likely to see themselves as overweight. We also test interaction effects between religion and race. Religious attendance and prayer have a moderating effect among Latina non-citizens so that among these women, attendance and prayer intensify perceptions of feeling less overweight when compared to their white counterparts. Among African American women, the effect of increased church attendance leads to perceptions of being overweight. Prayer is also a correlate of overweight perceptions but only among African American women. We close with a discussion that highlights key implications from our findings, note study limitations, and several promising avenues for future research

    Structuring communities for sharing human digital memories in a social P2P network

    A community is sub-network inside P2P networks that partition the network into groups of similar peers to improve performance by reducing network traffic and high search query success rate. Large communities are common in online social networks than traditional file-sharing P2P networks because many people capture huge amounts of data through their lives. This increases the number of hosts bearing similar data in the network and hence increases the size of communities. This article presents a Memory Thread-based Communities for our Entity-based social P2P network that partition the network into groups of peers sharing data belonging to an entity–person, place, object or interest, having its own digital memory or be a part another memory. These connected peers having further similarities by organizing the network using linear orderings. A Memory-Thread is the collection of digital memories having a common reference key and organized according to some form of correlation. The simulation results show an increase in network performance for the proposed scheme along with a decrease in network overhead and higher query success rate compared to other similar schemes. The network maintains its performance even while the network traffic and size increase
